H2HUB Initiative submits funding applications for nine hydrogen filling stations and over 70 hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles in Bavaria

Ottobrunn/Munich, July 2, 2026 – On June 30, the H2HUB Initiative supported funding applications for nine public hydrogen filling stations and for more than 70 heavy-duty commercial vehicles in Bavaria. Distributed across the locations of Augsburg, Munich, Nuremberg, Southern Bavaria (including Piding), and Regensburg, this initiative aims to establish or expand additional H2 filling stations and an extended network for H2 refueling of heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

Funding program significantly oversubscribed

The H2HUB Initiative’s applications are part of a program that has seen strong demand nationwide. As the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) announced on July 1, 71 applications for hydrogen filling stations and 455 applications for H2 vehicles and fleets were received across Germany. With a budget of 220 million euros, a funding volume of 455 million euros was requested. The funding call is therefore considered successful, but significantly oversubscribed. Federal Minister of Transport Schnieder spoke of it as the basis for a reliable hydrogen filling station network in heavy-duty transport.

The National Hydrogen Council (NWR) also classified the funding call in its basic paper of June 18 as a potential turning point for market ramp-up and sees it as the basis for a basic network of hydrogen filling stations by approximately 2030 – with a truck fleet in the range of several thousand vehicles.

About the H2HUB Initiative

The H2HUB Initiative connects companies, municipalities, and mobility providers to build regional hydrogen ecosystems and actively shape the market ramp-up by 2030. The initiative is coordinated by Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik GmbH (LBST) in Ottobrunn and is supported by over 25 partners from industry, infrastructure, and the public sector.

The initiative convened its fourth status meeting on July 2 in Ottobrunn to discuss the status of the applications and the next steps in developing Bavaria’s H2 infrastructure. Representatives from LBST GmbH, Atawey, BenTec, BMW AG, Cavendish Hydrogen A/S, Robert Bosch GmbH, Fest Group, H2Powercell, Hyundai Europe, KEYOU GmbH, KYROS Hydrogen Solutions GmbH, Maximator Hydrogen, Resato Hydrogen Technology B.V., TEAL Mobility, and Tyczka Hydrogen attended both on-site and online.

In the coming months, regional stakeholders will be supported in the further preparation and planning of H2 projects, and the regional H2HUBs in Bavaria will be expanded. In the long term, cross-border H2 corridors for long-distance transport are to be established and expanded in close cooperation with partners and interested stakeholders.

BayH2N call for funding launched: H2HUB Initiative supports companies with funding applications for hydrogen commercial vehicles

On August 5, 2026, the first call for funding under the Bavarian funding program for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles (BayH2N) was launched. Up to €15 million is available for this first call – part of a total program worth €35 million, with which the Free State of Bavaria is driving the market ramp-up of hydrogen mobility in the commercial vehicle sector until 2028.
